Colored Stone Rings: 7 Trends of 2017

Hello friends! At Lonnie’s, we get to see first hand how peoples’ tastes evolve over the years. With each new generation, people want to change and stand out from the last generation. In 2017, we saw some surprising trends in colored stone rings. We have blogged before about diamond color, so today we’re going to talk about the trends in colored stones this past year. If you’re looking for something fresh and exciting, take a look at these more unconventional precious stones.

     1. Yellow Diamonds

Bright, striking, and light-hearted, canary yellow diamonds have been flying out of stores in 2017. They have always been a popular alternative to diamonds in colored stone rings. In recent years, though, young couples have flocked to yellow diamonds. The new generations want something new. They want to stand out. Yellow diamonds are the perfect mix of traditional and trendy for the modern jewelry box.

     2. Black Diamonds

Bold, black diamonds have a certain gravitas. The night sky, the mouth of a deep cave, the unexplored depths of the ocean—the black curtain of the unknown intrigues the imagination. Or perhaps people don’t think so metaphorically and just like the color. Either way, black diamonds have been surging. They are even being used as engagement rings, a complete departure from the traditional white. If you are looking for a unique colored stone ring, black diamonds are popular growing option.

     3. Amethyst

Amethyst has been trending in 2017, catching peoples’ eye both for its gentle purple hue and its price. Compared to colored diamonds, amethyst colored stone rings are a steal. The beautiful stone certainly stands out in a jewelry store, since purple is a color you won’t find in other precious stones. Amethyst has been used in jewelry for a long time, but 2017 saw a rise in it being used in engagement rings. They pair well with any outfit, fit any situation, and are a quiet replacement for people who aren’t looking for vibrant stones. Also, pharaohs wore them in their sarcophagus’ as protection. The afterlife can be daunting, but an amethyst colored stone ring can take that weight off your shoulders.

     4. Emeralds

An emerald’s deep green hue has been valued throughout history, but 2017 has seen a spike in their popularity. Emeralds are guaranteed to stand out. Celebrities have been showcasing emeralds recently, and the public has jumped on the trend. They are most often paired with other colored stones and on earrings. But emerald colored stone rings are one trend that has certainly not crested its wave of popularity. In a few years, expect to see emeralds popping up on engagement rings.

     5. Garnets

Of all the trends in 2017, garnets were the biggest surprise. The demand has sky-rocketed in the last few years. They are more subdued than rubies, and don’t gleam and sparkle like diamonds, but can be just as stunning—and much less expensive. Garnets have a new role as engagement rings, whereas before they were mostly seen in casual jewelry. Whether you want a colored stone ring for your big day, a casual night out, or a trip to the grocery store, garnets are being appreciated as a flexible option.

     6. Onyx

Onyx is an increasingly popular alternative to black diamonds, although it can be found in other colors. It is mostly used in necklaces and earrings for contrast. However, they are becoming a more popular option for colored stone rings. Black is always going to be elegant, and onyx is elegant without being extravagant. You can wear onyx much more casually then some other colored stones. For you Pokémon players, onyx also connotes a rock-type with high defense and physical attack—this precious stone is perfect for telling your loved one that you value these qualities in them.

     7. Rubies

People in 2017 are falling in love with rubies. The passionate red color is an exciting option for colored stone rings. The Blu-Ray release of Aladdin in 2012 definitely helped by reintroducing the public to Jafar’s eye-catching ruby-adorned headdress, though rubies have historically been linked to royalty. Celebrities and fashion icons often used rubies as a dramatic flare in 2017. A ruby ring adds some fire to an outfit, especially when displayed on a colored stone ring.
